Apex Academy is a personalized learning option within Yukon Public Schools for students in grades 7–12. It combines mastery-based academics, life skills development, interest exploration, and real-world learning experiences to help students reach their highest potential.

Traditional classrooms continue to serve many students exceptionally well. Apex Academy would not replace traditional school, it would provide an additional pathway for students who may benefit from a different learning experience.

The model is built around four core pillars:

Mastery – Students learn at the level that is right for them and progress based on demonstrated understanding.

Exploration – Students have opportunities to explore interests, careers, and future possibilities.

Identity – Students develop confidence, independence, and a deeper understanding of their strengths and goals.

Contribution – Students apply their learning by creating, building, serving, or contributing something meaningful.

Through the Compass Experience, students explore interests and gradually move toward creating projects, experiences, internships, or other meaningful work connected to their passions and future goals. Our goal is not simply to help students master academic content. We want them to understand their strengths, discover their passions, develop confidence in themselves, and leave with a clearer sense of who they are and where they want to go.

As a personalized learning option within Yukon Public Schools, Apex Academy combines academic pathways, customized to individual students, with intentional exploration to help students reach their highest potential. Students learn at the level that’s right for them during a core learning block, while teacher guides coach them toward independence and confidence. In addition to their core learning, students actively explore their interests and begin building real-world passion projects connected to what they are most interested in. Our goal is not simply to help students master academic content; we want them to understand their strengths, discover their passions, and conquer their own unique ascent. Students will leave with a clearer sense of who they are, where they want to go, and how to achieve excellence.

A Typical Day at YPS Apex Academy

Whether attending Yukon Middle School or Yukon High School, students across grades 7–12 follow a consistent daily structure. At YPS Apex Academy, students move through core classes at their own individual pace, mastering content through a digital platform. Core instruction is designed to be completed in about three focused hours each day, using short work bursts of learning and planned breaks to help students stay engaged, manage time, and build strong learning habits. Students also have a longer “extended learning” portion that becomes more choice and experience-based as they get older. Middle grades include a dedicated elective hour (which could be used for electives for high school credit) plus life-skill development and passion exploration, while high school adds increasing independence and real-world application through student-choice electives, sustained Compass Project work, and by 12th grade, significant time for an internship alongside the Compass Project. Apex Academy is intentional in ensuring that each grade level is constructed to support the growth and capacity of the student that culminates in a passion project for the student called the “Compass Project.”

Life Skills Focus

Another advantage that students receive at the Apex Academy is intentional focus on activities and experiences that foster intensive growth opportunities in the following critical life skills for young adults to develop:

Teamwork & Leadership
Students learn to work productively with others and take positive initiative in small, low-stakes ways.

Storytelling & Public Speaking
Students practice sharing ideas clearly and confidently in short, frequent formats—not just big speeches.

Entrepreneurship & Financial Literacy
Students learn how ideas become plans—and how money choices affect goals.

Relationship Building & Socialization
Students learn skills for friendships, teamwork, and handling social stress in a growing, complex peer world.

Grit & Hard Work
Students practice sticking with hard things, using strategies when they get stuck, and bouncing back after mistakes.

Apex Compass Project
The Compass Project serves as the capstone of the Apex Academy experience and is a tangible manifestation of a student's self-guided journey. It moves learning away from passive consumption and shifts it entirely toward active creation and ownership.

Starting during 10th grade and driven by their personal passion, students pitch and develop a long-term project centered entirely around their unique interests, future career goals, or curiosities. Throughout this self-guided journey, a dedicated teacher guide works alongside them as a coach, asking critical questions, helping navigate roadblocks, and providing accountability while preserving the student's absolute autonomy. By managing a project from scratch, students navigate the highs and lows of real-world execution, building invaluable life skills. Ultimately, this experience cultivates deep independence and personal evolution, ensuring the final product is not just a grade on a report card, but a showcase of a student who has mastered the self-direction needed for lifelong success.
